will need to find out and wait. this supposedly abuse happened during their relationship. the sheriff has said through his attorney that he has never physically abused anyone he's had a relationship with. he pled not guilty to misdemeanor domestic violence charges against his wife, eleana lopez. the mayor met with the sheriff to see if he will step aside during his trial. the sheriff said he will not. he will not receive pay. he says he will not handle any disciplinary cases involving deputies in the department for the time being. the mayor is due back in court tomorrow to try to get a court order modified that prevents him from seeing his son. there will be a rally here. there will be a bunch of ross

supporters, rallying around him including his wife. we're live in san francisco, i'm tara moriarty, ktvu channel 2 news. a moment ago -- we're following breaking news. chp is investigating a fatal crash on westbound 80 in richmond. claudine wong has just arrived on the scene. what can you tell us? >> reporter: i just talked to the chp. they say right now they are looking for the coroner. i want to show you the van involved in this accident. chp says this all happened when a white pickup truck was traveling in the carpool lane. that's the we're standing in frow. they say that went all the way across all four lanes. that's when it was clipped by this white toyota truck. it flipped a couple of times at least and the driver was killed inside that van. police say it seems pretty clear cut about how this all went down. they say the driver of the white pickup truck and the passenger, both are okay.

. 7:3 -- 7:30. highway patrol vaufers are investigating a fatal crash along westbound 80 that's causing a major backup. ktvu's claudine wong join us live from the scene. claudine, how do things look now? >> reporter: tori, the coroner is on scene now. the accident is closer to being cleared up. you can see the white van just behind the brown van as they work to get the victim out of

the vehicle. that brown flitched multiple times, killing the driver this morning. the chp says a white pickup truck was in this carpool lane when that minivan actually went across three lanes and hit that truck. the chp tells us what happened next. >> the van came across from the number 4 lane into the number 1 lane contacting the right front corner of the pickup truck. that sent the van over onto its roof where it tumbled multiple times and came to rest in the 2 -- in the number 2 lane. >> reporter: the driver and passenger of the pickup truck are fine. they've left the scene. i want to show you the skid marks where this van flipped. and you can see the chp officers walking down the highway. this accident goes 500 to 600 feet. they said it started very far back and the vehicle just flipped so many times there is a debris field that stretches

all the way down the freeway. i want to give you a look at the traffic pause this is causing a mess. you see the traffic -- that's the carlson road onramp. you can still get on there. everyone else who is coming westbound on 80 will run into a backup that stretches for a long time and because the coroner has just arrived, we still have a little bit of time before they -- before they are able to take this victim away, clear up the debris and get this van out of the way. we could be here for a while. claudine wong, back to you. let's go to sal castanedo following alternate routes how to get aaround this. >> reporter: many people who use the east shore will get off the freeway an use the richmond parkway which joins the freeway up near the hilltop mall.

right up here. and you can take 580 heading out toward the berkeley area away from the richmond bridge. you can use that to bypass this. as claudine mentioned, p you -- if you are in richmond and get yourself through carlson boulevard then you will avoid all of this mess. you can see the road sensors, solid red from pinole. this is a terrible -- this is terrible news for the commute there. if you can put it off, i know sometimes people can't but if you can't, it would be benter to wait until the lanes are open. let's go back to the desk. all right. sal, 7:34. police in pleasant hill out there searching for armed robbers. both happened within an hour. the two locations were just a few miles apart. but police think the crimes are not connected since descriptions of the suspect and

fallout continues from the oakland police writers scandal. howard jordan has been ordered to work more closely with an independent monitor. nine years ago, the police department agrees to make reforms following the writers case. a federal judge overseeing the consent de -- decree says jordan must consult with a monitor when promoting or displining officers. the writers were a group of officers accused of beating and framing suspects. the officers were never convicted of any crimes. the san jose city council is moving toward ending its pension. council members voted unanimously yesterday to notify the system that te will -- the system that this le -- that

>> reporter: this is westbound 80. the coroner left the scene and then the tow truck removed the van. all of this started about 6:00 this morning.

that's when the chp says a white truck was driving in the carpool lane. and a brown minivan crossed three lanes of traffic and clipped that white truck just on the front end. that white truck got a glat tire, was skidding around for 500, 600 feet. all the while watching the brown mini brown flip, multiple times in front of it. the driver of the minivan was killed. but the impact -- this it -- this is too much for -- this was too much for him and he died at the scene. the big question is why this happened. >> that's what we're looking to find out. >> reporter: he should not even be going in the carpool lane? >> no. >> reporter: back live out here along interstate 880, the chp took aerial photos of the scene which stretched 500, 600 feet. they will talk to witnesses.

they say multiple witnesses were on the highway when this happened. speeds were about 65 miles an hour, which is the speed limit out here. as you can see, things are going much more slowly this morning. at its worse they say traffic was backed up. the moving commute has picked up. it is very slow. i will tell you, i talked to the chp officer who says he has his officers lined all the way up and down this freeway watching for bad driving. what they do not want is another mess. they don't want people weeding through here. sal has been keeping an eye on the alternate routes going in and out of here. i don't know, sal, if there are any other better ways to get through here. >> as a matter of fact, the alternate routes, claudine, are jammed up. i just got a suite from -- tweet from saying people are taking san pablo avenue. and -- and that's jammed up

. this is now day 7 with no electricity for some of the residents in southwest washington state. last week's huge snowstorm knocked out -- knocked out power for about 6,000 people in trout lake. some of the businesses are using those backup generators to stay open. but schools have been closed ever since that storm hit. utility crews working 16-hour shifts trying to get the power back on. they hope to have it back up and running within the next couple of days. 8:56. a fire forced a family of five in oakland out of their

apartment last night. firefighters rushed to a building on bancroft avenue around 9:30 p.m. they got a look inside the first floor unit where the fire started. the flames caused a lot of damage and burned the ceilings and walls. the residents got out safely. the cause of the fire is still under investigation. a gas pipe line rupture prompted a brief evacuation in san bruno. it happened two miles away from the site of the deadly explosion in 2010. pg&e says construction crews accidentally damaged the line on chestnut avenue. about half a dozen homes were evacuated for 45 minutes as a precaution. the pipe line was repaired by 6:00 p.m. caltrans says the work to build that fourth bore for the caldecott tunnel is moving into the fast lane. crews working in opposite direction has now connected two major tunnel sections and the additional freeway lanes between orinda and oakland are
